Tim Steel has run the Chevron clothing shop in Wrexham for three decades and these past six months have marked his busiest stretch ever.
And it’s not just the brewery and merchandising companies that are feeling the impact of the Reynolds-McElhenney effect on their business. Chris Davies operates a media production company and has secured some contracts for camera work to help shoot episodes of “Welcome to Wrexham.” Davies believes the superstar owners have been able to attract partnerships and sponsorships that nobody could have fathomed in the past.
Two of those local councillors — Mark Pritchard and Nigel Williams — agreed to a lengthy conversation withinside a large office in Wrexham’s Guildhall, where all of the municipal affairs are handled. “There is just a sense of excitement that everybody wants to be a part of,” says Williams. “There is a real buzz around here now.”
The two councillors are thoroughly impressed that Reynolds and McElhenney are even trying to get a handle on speaking the native Welsh language. That is an extremely daunting task, considering the letters in the Welsh language have their own unique pronunciation that often don’t resemble their English counterparts. And written words in Welsh can often appear to an outsider like something you would see on the eye chart in an optometrist’s office.
Pritchard says the gravitational pull between tiny community and Hollywood superstars works in the exact opposite direction you would expect. “They could have gone anywhere and bought a football club. But they chose us,” adds Pritchard. “And it’s been transformational.”“Rob and Ryan want to come to your shop tomorrow. But you can’t tell anyone.”
But Clarke was on a family vacation a few months later when his phone suddenly pinged alive with a notification.Two minutes later, a direct message followed. Reynolds told him to “use the DVDs however you want.” Clarke says he was able to make almost £2,500 alone from auctioning off the signed DVDs. It warns motorists of upcoming traffic disruptions for a Kings of Leon concert happening at the soccer club’s home stadium, The Racecourse Ground. The event isn’t happening until the final weekend in May, but clearly there is a buzz around the city for this show. In the past, most major concerts and acts have not even thought about playing a show at Wrexham.
