Britain's Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has urged the Kremlin to 'de-escalate' the crisis over Ukraine amid 'concern' about rising tensions in Europe.

Top US diplomat Antony Blinken warned the United States and its allies were prepared to 'impose significant costs' on the Kremlin. Pic: Alex Brandon/Pool via REUTERSThe Russian foreign ministry said Mr Lavrov told Mr Blinken that Russia would respond to any US"geopolitical games" that affected Ukraine, according to the Interfax news agency. He also said Moscow and Washington needed to agree on long-term security guarantees.

A spokesman for Mr Blinken said the top US diplomat warned if Moscow chose"the path of military escalation" then the United States and its allies were prepared to"impose significant costs". A second US official said there had been a constructive exchange on implementing existing peace agreements for eastern Ukraine as a possible pathway out of the crisis, and further intense diplomacy was likely in coming days.
