Ukrainian forces appear to once again be making lightning advances through the eastern and southern parts of their country. But the latest Russian retreats comes as Vladimir Putin absorbed the four regions annexed by Russia last week.

Yesterday the Russian defence ministry presented maps that appeared to show a significant loss of territory. That suggests they have vacated the last remnants of Kharkiv province, with Ukraine liberating a number of key areas, except a small area between the town of Dvorichna and the Russian border.The Kherson region was officially annexed by Putin but Ukraine has been advancing regardless

Earlier this week, both houses of the Russian parliament ratified treaties making the regions part of Russia. The Moscow-appointed deputy head of the Kherson region, Kirill Stremousov, said: ‘Our artillery and fighter jets are hitting enemy forces that enter the sovereign territory of Russia.
