The midfielder was hoping to finally get his chance at Manchester City in Rodri's absence but it never came to pass.
'It's probably the biggest week or so in my Man City career,' Kalvin Phillips told reporters in the aftermath of Rodri's red card against Nottingham Forest. Instead it may well have been the final nail in the coffin.
Since signing from Leeds United last year, Phillips' journey with City has been a tough one. He suffered a serious shoulder injury in pre-season and registered just 57 minutes of competitive football before the World Cup. “He played at Newcastle two or three weeks ago in the cup game, and he didn’t do too much good. He didn’t do enough. You’ve got to win the manager’s trust. He works with him every day in training. There’s a reason why he’s not playing and he doesn’t trust him.
