Crawshawbooth and Weir are the focus of two playground schemes being looked at by Rossendale Council’s cabinet this month
Two Rossendale village play areas and cycle ‘pump tracks’ are earmarked for upgrades using existing cash funds, including money paid by a developer in a planning agreement, along with new funding bids to cover rising costs.
At Weir, new play equipment, safety surfacing, street furniture and a natural-style play area with boulders and a trim trail are recommended. Both projects involve local community groups and an organisation called Proffitts CIC, a community investment company based in Greenmount, Bury,Proffitts has worked on other projects with various Lancashire councils, schools and community organisations.
“Working with a local community association, £30,000 has been secured from the Lancashire Environment Fund towards the project. Proffitts CIC was commissioned to carry out community consultation. Designs have since been produced and external funding and Section 106 contributions have been identified to fund most of the scheme.”
At Weir, Rossendale Council has worked with the community to secure over £42,000 of external funding from organisations including Tesco and local fundraising events. Initially, it was proposed the council would pay £14,500 from its own play area capital improvement budget to the Weir work, taking the first phase of work there to almost £57,000.The cabinet report adds: “The play equipment was purchased from the budget to ensure value for money at £18,500 in February 2022.
