Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins on Friday, September 15
The Merseyside Jewish community is getting ready to celebrate the new year with a season of reflection, prayer, and tradition.
He said: "Rosh Hashanah is a celebration of the creation of the world and marks making a fresh start. It is a time for people to reflect on the past year and to ask for forgiveness for anything wrong they feel they have done." The Jewish calendar is based on the moon and not the sun . Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which has one clear New Year's Day on January 1, the Jewish calendar contains several “New Year” dates.
Yom Kippur, or the day of atonement, is coming up on September 24, and it involves a 25-hour fast that will test your faith and your stomach. The fast starts at sundown on Sunday, September 24, and will last until nightfall on Monday, September 25.
