A railway bridge is set to stay closed for most of October due to damage caused by a head-on crash in late September.

A Range Rover and a Hyundai both suffered severe damage in the collision, which is being investigated by police.Read more:Damage to the wall of the railway bridge. Image: Alexander Mathewson

The bridge, situated by the junction with Watling Street, has remained closed since and Network Rail has been granted a permit by Hertfordshire County Council to carry out repairs until October 21. Park Street councillor Nuala Webb says there is a “chance” the closure could be extended, according to a Facebook post by the St Albans Liberal Democrats.Read more:Damage to the Range Rover, left, while the Hyundai travelling in the opposite direction, can be seen in the photo on the right. No arrests have been made following the incident, which occurred on a single-file bridge that is controlled by three-way traffic lights, but officers have launched an investigation into how and why the crash happened. The bridge became single-file in 2021 after the Harper Lane and Watling Street junction was redesigned.
