Rishi Sunak confirms leadership bid, vowing to 'steer economy through tough times'

to receive public backing from 100 MPs, shoring up sufficient support to be on the ballot for Monday’s vote.

“The choice our Party makes now will decide whether the next generation of British people will have more opportunities than the last. “There will be integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level of the government I lead and I will work day in and day out to get the job done. I am asking you for the opportunity to help fix our problems. To lead our Party and country forward towards the next General Election, confident in our record, firm in our convictions and ready to lead again”.

Mr Johnson arrived back from a holiday in the Dominican Republic on Saturday, before holding a summer with Mr Sunak on Saturday evening. However, no agreement was reached between the two men,Conservative former cabinet minister Dominic Raab said he was not expecting a deal between Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak, who he is backing.: “No, I don’t think there’s any issue around deals here and that’s not the right way to proceed.

Mr Sunak has also been endorsed by right-wing favourite Kemi Badenoch, who backed him as a Thatcherite figure capable of securing the public’s trust.
