Tallies suggest at least 128 MPs are behind Mr Sunak, while Mr Johnson has the public support of 53 and Commons leader Penny Mordaunt, the first and only candidate to officially declare she plans to participate in the contest, has just 23.Opposition MPs have said another Conservative should not become the country’s next prime minister without a general election.
Mr Blackford said it is “vital that opposition parties work together to force a vote of no confidence, and pile pressure on the Tories to call a general election, so voters can decide”.
