Police are urging residents not to leave valuable items unattended and to make sure their cars and homes are locked and secured

Motorists are being warned to make sure their vehicles are locked after thieves have been seen "trying car door handles".

Ribble Valley Police said they have received reports of "suspicious activity" on several streets in Longridge in recent days. It is not known whether they were aiming to steal from the cars or take the vehicles. Although nothing was stolen, police want to remind people how to keep their vehicles safe. They are urging residents not to leave valuable items unattended and to make sure their cars and homes are locked and secured.PC Paddy Bowdich, of the Ribble Valley Neighbourhood Team, said in a statement last night: "We want to make residents aware of suspicious activity in the Longridge area. A member of the public has approached police today to inform us about a male trying car door handles.

"This was in the Darwen Close area of Longridge in the early hours of this morning . There has also been a recent report of similar activity in the area of Mardale Road, Longridge. "Please be vigilant and make sure vehicles and houses are locked/secured. With valuable items not left in vehicles, unattended. If you witness and suspicious activity, it can be reported on 101 or 999 in emergency or reported online via the Lancashire Constabulary website."
