Flights are due to land on Rhodes later on Monday to bring back holidaymakers left stranded by wildfires which have swept the Greek island.

Olga Kefalo O-Gianni, the Greek tourism minister, told the BBC the situation on Corfu is "not alarming" and stressed the scale of the evacuation is much smaller than on Rhodes.

The UK Foreign Office issued updated travel advice for Greece on Sunday, warning "the situation can change quickly, so you should stay up to date with official advice". He told the Today programme that government travel advice is under regular review and "there will be a change...if it is required". Theofanis Skembris, the deputy mayor of North Corfu, said the local fire department's "first unofficial assumption is that it was arson" as the blazes started "simultaneously in four different places".Tourists have sheltered in stadiums and schools after being evacuated from the path of wildfires
