The new addition in Lady Bay is quirky and different - just don't mention the coriander
Anyone not up on the history of Notts might be rather confused by the rather strange name of a cafe that opened a few months ago. Bread and Lard Island must be baffling if you're an outsider.
Once a church, built nearly 120 years ago, it now takes on an industrial look with stripped-back brick walls, exposed ductwork and a chipboard counter. Colourful abstract paintings and plants add splashes of colour and some of the chairs have quirky coverings detailing the back pockets of what were once pink trousers in a former life.
As it's a warm day, I skip my usual Americano, lured in by the jugs of colourful iced tea at the counter - the 'Magic' iced tea is a fruity blend, while the blue pea flower is more herby. I opt for the latter, a refreshingly cold, and unusual drink that's popular in Thailand. Two thick slices of sourdough are toasted to golden perfection with melted cheese spilling over the sides. What really sets it off though is the kimchi - a Korean classic of fermented cabbage and carrots with added flavourings such as garlic and ginger. It all adds up to tasty bites of crunch, gooeyness and tang.
