Retired Scots solicitor tried to rig General Election by posting rumours about politician online

A retired solicitor has been found guilty of trying to rig a General Election by posting rumours about a politician being probed by police over nude photos of a woman.

He said: "I was made aware of it around 8am. My first concern was for the safety and security of my family, and at 9 am I got in touch with the party lawyer as I was made aware this was not the only post. Mr Law said he did not know who Justice was at the time, but became aware that he had a taxi with "Vote Jim Malone" on the side of it. Mr Malone was the Labour candidate standing against Mr Law for the Dundee West constituency.

PC Mark Crawford told the trial: "It appears to be an allegation that SNP MP Chris Law has committed some sort of sexual offence." He said he had been told by the licensee at the bar and the story had been repeated by various "Labour Party luminaries" before he posted it online on the eve of the election.
