John Lewis moved site and closed the final chapter of George Henry Lee
It's now been 15 years since the iconic George Henry Lee site, then rebranded as John Lewis, closed its doors - but there's now fresh hope for the iconic building.
The curtain came down on more than a century of shopping history in 2008 when partners said a fond farewell to their Basnett Street home. In May that year, the much-loved store closed its doors, bringing an end to 155 years of George Henry Lee’s. "One of the longest standing staff members is branch maintenance manager Mark Allen, who has spent 29 years caring for the building. He said: "This really is a very grand building, but it is old so you do get leaks and other problems.
Images, recently rediscovered from our archives, capture the final day inside the building as we then knew it as John Lewis in 2008. From tearful staff members finishing their shifts to a fond farewell inside the store, these are bound to stir some memories, they capture the final days of the site when it still had ties to the George Henry Lee name.
But now, fresh proposals are aiming to breathe new life into the building. Earlier this month plans to transform the former George Henry Lee’s Building into a luxury hotel were revealed.
