Then Fraser picked up an axe. "I didn't feel too much," Mason would later say. "But then I must have put my hand up to ward off a blow. But then came the infamous murder of his pal, Jack 'The Hat' McVitie, which saw Mason sever ties with the brothers. On October 29, 1967, McVitie, an enforcer and hitman with links to the Krays, was invited to a party in Stoke Newington, North London.
