Question marks were raised over Ancelotti after his side's Madrid derby defeat - but the Italian is used to the pressure
Late on Monday, less than 24 hours before kick-off in ’s match at Napoli, there was an earthquake in the Italian city. It registered at 4.2 on the Richter scale, its magnitude classified as “light” and its epicentre was in the north of Naples, far from where Madrid’s players were staying, by the coast at the Grand Hotel Vesuvio. Curiously, this was where president Aurelio de Laurentiis informed Carlo Ancelotti of his dismissal as the club’s manager in December 2019.
That midfield gamble was viewed the same way by the board of directors and Perez, who for months had been looking for the coach to place more emphasis on youth. The president himself had reiterated that idea in multiple conversations with Ancelotti. “It was my fault,” Ancelotti told the press conference after that result. “I have very broad shoulders.” It was a characteristically philosophical answer from the veteran coach and a sign of his considerable experience.
