Once in a Blue Moon - when you can see the rare Super Blue Moon from the comfort of your own window tonight

If you're lucky, you might be able to catch a glimpse of a rare phenomenon from the comfort of your own home tonight.

This is called a 'Blue Moon' and due to its rarity, the phrase 'Once in a Blue Moon' was coined, but it is admittedly quite misleading. The moon isn't actually blue in colour, it simply refers to the second full moon in one calendar month. Most months only have one full moon, so a second is quite rare, the Mirror reports. The Super Blue Moon is when a full moon takes place at the 'perigee' - both full and at, or near, its closest point to Earth, according to NASA.

Two super moons are only due to appear in the same month again in 2037, so you may want to catch a glimpse of it tonight. The best time to see the rare phenomenon will be around 7.52pm tonight and it will then peak at around 2.35am on Thursday morning. Visibility should be good for around a day on either side, after the moon peaks in the early hours of the morning. The best view is said to be after sunset, or moonrise and likewise, moonset, or just before sunrise.
