What is bullying, in 2023? Anyone who’s been on the receiving end will think they know. People can be haunted for decades. Some of the saddest reader letters I have received speak of the continued impact 50 years later.for a moment. There is a wider, legitimate debate about the resilience of workers who are unreceptive to critical feedback – as well as the inappropriate conduct of managers who fail to adapt to changing standards in the workplace.

Good managers are not always reasonable. Ministers have a duty to demand exceptionally high standards. And we have all worked with people who would drive a saint crackers. But effective management doesn’t require bullying.
