Pumpkin can be 'dangerous' for various British wildlife, and make beloved critters like hedgehogs 'very poorly'
People are being urged to not dump their used Halloween pumpkins in their garden or woodlands - despite 'myths' of the fruit being 'good for wildlife'. For beloved British animals like hedgehogs, foxes, badgers and various birds, pumpkins can be dangerous for their health.
Kate Wollen, Assistant Ecologist of Forestry England says for hedgehogs in particular, pumpkins can make them "dangerously dehydrated" due to "stomach upsets and diarrhoea". Latest stats show hedgehogs are in decline in Britain and are now listed as "Vulnerable" on Britain's red list of mammals. Kate warns: “We see many posts on social media encouraging people to leave pumpkins in the woods for wildlife to eat, but please do not do this. Pumpkins are not natural to the woodland and while some wildlife may enjoy a tasty snack it can make others, such as hedgehogs, very poorly.
To protect forest wildlife and to help reduce food waste, Kate suggests using leftover pumpkins in various other eco-friendly ways. She continues: “There are lots of great ways to use your pumpkin after Halloween at home, and my favourites are to use the flesh to make a hearty soup, or to add to my compost.

Pumpkin Patch Overwhelmed by 3,000 Daily Pickers Despite Storm DamageJoe Hamer of Arscott Farm in Pontesford has struggled to meet the demand as up to 3,000 people a day have turned up to pick pumpkins this year, despite the recent storms turning his patch into something resembling 'the Somme'. Despite the challenging conditions, Joe has sold six times as many pumpkins as last year and has had to employ extra staff to manage the influx of visitors. He plans to learn from this experience and prepare for next year, when he will also start selling Christmas trees.
