Most drivers are no doubt aware that they need to tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency if they have a medical condition. But what some might not know is how long the list of notifiable conditions is.
In fact, there are 189 medical conditions that drivers have to inform the DVLA, which is the Government department that issues driving licences and takes car tax payments, about. Some of them are common things that drivers might not realise are on the list. Failing to tell the DVLA could mean a £1,000 fine or, in the event of an accident, prosecution. Guidance on Gov.uk says anyone who holds a driving licence must inform DVLA if you "develop a ‘notifiable’ medical condition or disability" or a "condition or disability has got worse since you got your licence", reports the Liverpool ECHO.
With some conditions, your doctor may tell you to stop driving for a set time period. In this situation, or if you do not meet the required standards for driving to due your medical condition, you can voluntarily give up your licence for a certain timeframe. If you have a medical condition that affects your driving and do not voluntarily give up your licence, you must inform the DVLA, and they will decide if you can continue to hold your driving licence.
Medical conditions you may need to report to the DVLA Having or being diagnosed with an above condition does not necessarily mean you need to report it to the DVLA, as with some conditions the need to declare it may be based on additional factors, such as being told not to drive by a doctor, or the severity of the illness.
