A barrister-led probe investigating complaints of bullying and harassment by Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC ) chair Baroness Falkner has been resumed, officials have confirmed

The probe into the peer’s conduct was placed on hold in May – ostensibly to “seek legal advice on the impact of leaked confidential information” – days after allies of Baroness Falkner claimed in theBut a spokesperson for the EHRC confirmed on Tuesday: “Following legal advice, the pause on the investigation has been lifted. We are unable to comment further to protect the integrity of the investigation and to ensure fairness to all parties.

“As recently as October 2022, we were again graded ‘A status’ as a National Human Rights Institution. This is clear recognition of our independence and our compliance with the Paris Principles . “There is a clear need to move the public debate on issues of sex and gender to a more informed and constructive basis. We look forward to working with the Government and others to find a way forward on these important issues, but recognise that these decisions sit with the UK Government and UK Parliament.”

“It was considered appropriate to investigate the allegations through an independent investigator. While that process continues, all I can do is explain that allegations were received in February in my capacity as Chair of the Commission. They relate to both me and to the whole Board.
