Bosses say it's now a 'safe and entertaining venue'
A Preston city centre pub is facing a licence review amid a series of violent incidents and repeated police callouts. However the management says significant changes have been made to turn the pub into a "safe and entertaining venue".
When approached by LancsLive, the pub’s premises supervisor Anthony Newman disputed the events, noting that the investigation was closed due to a lack of evidence. He added: “We put a strict age verification policy in place and all the door staff challenge 25 so the only way that would have happened is if someone came in with a fake ID.
In November, Preston City Council’s CCTV operators reported an incident involving a man “kicking off with door staff”. It transpired he had been removed by the bouncers and tried to punch one before going on to bite and punch the arrested police officers. The next day, police were twice called to the pub amid aggressive behaviour, with one man arrested for assault and possession of cannabis.
In January, a man claimed to have been headbutted and kicked and punched after an argument in the pub but the subsequent investigation was closed due to a lack of evidence. A similar outcome followed a claim that a man was punched by door staff two weeks later. In relation to this, Mr Newman told LancsLive that the man involved had not been drinking inside the pub and had instead been kicked out of another city centre pub. After that incident, PC Connolly offered to loan a knife wand for use by door staff but was told that there is already one used by door staff. Three weeks later, a lone member of staff called 999 when another knife incident occurred.
Primarily, the change of door staff and training of staff to apply for personal licences are seen as signs of progress. A stronger dress code has also been brought in to “tackle problematic customers”, while voluntary use of the knife wand has begun.
