Xi Jinping has been caught on camera tearing strips off of Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the G20 conference.
His annoyance was likely a reference to reports Trudeau brought up ‘serious concerns’ about alleged espionage and Chinese ‘interference’ in Canadian elections.
The PM, who initially appeared stunned by the reprimand, replied: ‘In Canada, we believe in free and open and frank dialogue and that is what we will continue to have. ‘We will continue to look to work constructively together, but there will be things we will disagree on.’ Xi, whose attempt to mask his frustration with a smile fooled nobody, cut him off saying: ‘Let’s create the conditions first.’President Xi tried to mask his obvious frustration with a smile It was a rare public display of anger from Xi, whose image is carefully curated by Chinese state media
The two shook hands after the brief encounter before Trudeau awkwardly wandered off and out of the room. They have been running high since the detention of China’s Huawei Technologies executive Meng Wanzhou in 2018 and Beijing’s subsequent arrest of two Canadians on spying charges.
