New figures show the Western Trust area makes up 35% of the total number of mental health admissions across Northern Ireland
Poverty and deprivation in the West have been blamed as one of the contributing factors to sky high mental health admissions in the region.
The sky high number of admissions comes despite the fact the Western Trust catchment area covers the lowest population size of all the Trust areas, covering 16% of the population. “Locally we have seen an increase in admissions, this is multifactorial and likely includes poverty and deprivation and differences in community services across different Trusts.
Figures from NISRA show one in four people in the area live in poverty while five of the top ten deprived local areas in NI fall within the Western Trust. "It could well be the case that other areas have greater access to community and voluntary services which mean they don't always go to Trust services, but the stress and anxiety caused by poverty and deprivation is certainly a big factor."Daniel McCrossan, SDLP MLA for West Tyrone, says the figures show that NHS services for mental health issues in areas of Tyrone, Derry and Fermanagh is 'buckling'.
“I have witnessed first-hand the failures of this system. Many of those unwell with their mental health are expected to sit in a busy and chaotic A&E waiting room which in my opinion is not the correct settling or system that best meets the needs of those struggling with mental health.
