Wilko has begun the process of shutting shops across the UK, with 12,500 jobs at risk
The owner of Poundland has agreed to buy up to 71 Wilko stores following the collapse of the high street chain.Wilko workers will not be automatically transferred to the new stores, but Pepco said it will “prioritise” existing employees when recruiting for the new Poundland stores, which it aims to open by the end of the year.
It comes after a proposed rescue deal by HMV owner Doug Putman to save a significant proportion of the stores collapsed last week. A total of 24 Wilko stores were closed on Tuesday in the first phase of closures, with a further 28 shops set to close after trading on Thursday. The firm’s warehouse is expeced to shut on Friday, with final support centre workers leaving in early October as operations completely unwind.
