The sandy stretches of the Algarve remain busy into September, but those in the know head inland
Some river beaches are big and popular such as in Coja, others small where just a handful of people will bathe or soak up the sun’s rays. There are far too many to name. The three major rivers of the area – the Mondego, Alva and Zezere – all have numerous swimming spots.
In Coja there is a sign for seven more Praia Fluvials nearby, while the Arganil tourist office lists 20 beaches or bathing areas., are more like large outdoor swimming pools fed by natural river water. Others, such as the Zone de Lazar at Casal Novo, are more suited to paddling among smooth stones and rocks, warmed by the sun deep in the valley of the River Ceira.
Access to the beach is down a zig-zag cobbled path from the village that cuts through allotments and small glades to open out onto a huge shingly beach, with the wooded banks of the river rising high on the other side. It’s almost like being at the bottom of a gorge. What surprised me about Colmeal – a tiny, out-of-the-way place – is that even here there is infrastructure for bathers – steps down to a paved sunbathing area, steps into the river and even a small changing block and picnic tables.sorta
