Rishi Sunak will face Sir Keir Starmer at Prime Minister's Questions for the first time in weeks at midday. It comes as the prime minister is under mounting pressure to declare what he knew about the crumbling concrete crisis in schools back in 2021.
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has faced significant scrutiny this week, with controversy over unsafe concrete in schools and an unfortunate"hot mic" moment. He said:"Some Tory MPs think there could be more difficult news for Gillian Keegan as early as this week.
We had a preview there of some of his lines of attack - urging the government to publish the full list of schools affected; pointing out that the 2021 Budget cut taxes on champagne but didn't increase funding for schools; and trying to paint the Conservatives as presiding over 13 years of crumbling decline of the public sector.
Rishi Sunak is likely to be ready for this. The infamous note left by Liam Byrne at the Treasury warning"I'm afraid there is no money" may get a mention. Sir Keir insists all spending commitments will be accounted for, but that a Labour government always spend more on public services and that he would avoid"sticking plaster solutions".
Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said the Department for Education should review its systems to see whether some of the supposedly non-returned RAAC survey forms were returned"but have not been recorded as such due to a technical error". Mr Barton has urged the government to"review its system" to ensure records on this matter are correct.10:55:01Every year, millions of pounds pour into Westminster - into the accounts of the people, groups, organisations and parties that work and operate at the centre of government. Although most of this money must technically be disclosed to the public, the way that information is reported, stored and displayed almost guarantees the records will not be widely scrutinised.
