It started innocuously for Gregg Berhalter and Tyler Adams at the podium. Then it turned into grilling on politics, diplomacy, economics and, occasionally, soccer. samstejskal and PaulTenorio on how USA-Iran is more than just a World Cup match.

The press conference began innocuously enough, with a reporter for an American outlet asking head coach Gregg Berhalter if he thought tactics or intensity would decide the U.S. men’s national team’s must-win match against Iran in their finalIt quickly transformed into something far more charged. Journalists from the U.S., Iran and Europe grilled Berhalter and U.S. captainon a variety of different topics, touching on politics, diplomacy, economics and, occasionally, soccer.

Adams was involved in the most memorable moment of what felt like a remarkable press conference. He mispronounced Iran in his initial answer in which he offered support for the country and its people, prompting an Iranian journalist to tersely correct him before asking how Adams felt representing a nation “that has so much discrimination against Black people in its own borders.”

The first question from an Iranian journalist asked Berhalter what percentage of the world would be happy if Iran won Tuesday’s game versus if the U.S. won. Berhalter tried to deflect back to soccer. ’s ethics committee, the American federation decided to delete the posts. The U.S. federation said it did so of its own accord and not because of any pressure from FIFA or other external parties.“Listen, we support Iran’s people and Iran’s team,” he said. “But that being said, we’re laser-focused on this match as they are, as well.

U.S. Soccer’s gesture wasn’t picked up by media until late Sunday morning Qatari time, hours after it was first posted. The fact that U.S. Soccer deleted those posts only a few hours after they publicly said they made them in support of the protesting Iranian women indicates they may not have been prepared for the backlash from the Iranian federation or any potential fallout with FIFA.

was asked earlier this month to remove a rainbow-striped face mask and replace it with a plain blue one. FIFA and Qatari authorities have blocked other displays of the rainbow flag and rainbow-like flags elsewhere during the tournament.that it was working with Amnesty International, the Centre for Sport and Human Rights and the International Labor Organization to ensure that all vendors it worked with in Qatar complied with the country’s updated labor reforms.
