Three areas of Preston have been warned of potential stop and search es by police after reports of disorder.
Lancashire Police have put out a notice to say that an authorisation under section 60aa of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act has been agreed for Larches, Savick and some of Ashton. They did not go into detail on what the disorder was. It means that officers will have powers to stop and search anyone in these areas, without having any reasonable grounds to do so. People will also be required to remove face coverings on request. In a statement, Lancashire Police said: "Following some reports of disorder in Preston this afternoon, an authorisation under section 60aa of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 has been authorised for Larches, Savick and some of Ashton.
"A Section 60 is a power given by an Inspector or above which allows police officers to stop and search anyone in a specific area without needing to have reasonable grounds. It also provides a requirement to remove face coverings on request. The power will run until 2am tomorrow morning." Inspector Dave Byrne, from Preston Neighbourhood Policing Team said “Normal stop and search powers mean people can only be stopped and searched if a police officer has reasonable grounds. A Section 60 allows police officers to stop and search people even if they don't have suspicions about them, which we are utilising for a short time to keep our communities safe.”
