Lancashire police officer who was arrested by her own colleagues after paranoid delusions took over her life
From the age of five years old, Becky House dreamed of joining the police. The uniform, the blue lights and a strong desire to help people held a special magnetism for the aspiring young officer.
"I didn't realise how bad it had got. When I started taking certain antidepressants I started having suicidal thoughts and trying to take my own life. I'd never even dreamt of anything like that before. I had dealt with similar incidents in the police but I'd never suffered any kind of depression before.
"It was scary and humiliating", she says. "I couldn't believe I was being carted off in cuffs. I'm not slating the police because I may have dealt with the situation in the same way myself, but to be on the other side of it, with my colleagues, doing what I did for a job was just horrendous. I didn't know what was going to happen. I didn't think I wouldn't be going home.
"From there it got gradually worse, the amount of force they used. I'm not an aggressive person, even when I was in the police I'd always try to reason with people. Part of me wonders if I was treated that way because I was a police officer - was it an authority thing? A power thing? "I could hear them laughing when they were doing it, like it was a game and I was a piece of meat. That will never leave me.
During her spell in hospital Becky lost two stones in weight, as her parents helplessly watched her deteriorate. After 28 days they fought to have her released from the section and she returned to her family home. "If I was going to survive they had to get me out", she says. "I stayed on uniform for a while, and that was hard. I had to go back to a psychiatric unit, this time in my uniform, to deal with a patient who tried to escape. I had a panic attack after that job because of the similarities.
