A report presented to members of the housing and communities committee shows there have been 178 fires started on purpose during the financial year 2023/24 so far - compared to a total of 226 in 2021/22 and 168 in 2022/23.
More than 170 deliberate fires have been recorded in West Dunbartonshire this year alone, according to new figures released by Scottish Fire and Rescue.
“It looks as though [the number of deliberate fires] has increased by quite a lot this year and they are being targeted on play areas, school areas and nursery grounds as well which is really disappointing because as an authority and as a community we look to these play areas to take our children to and spend time in.
A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue pointed out that the places targeted were refuse containers as well as grass and bushes. “Our community fire safety departments are working with businesses and trying to give them advice on how to dispose of their refuse at the end of the night by working alongside the local authority as well. We are looking at everything we can to reduce this.”
