The disease, caused by the persistent presence of plastic in the body's digestive system, leads to long-term inflammation and the widespread, and likely chronic, formation of scar tissue.

Scar tissue formation can disrupt blood supply, which can lead to further tissue damage and dysfunction, and even organ failure.

"While these birds can look healthy on the outside, they're not doing well on the inside", says study co-author and conservation biologist Dr Alex Bond, a principal curator and curator in charge of birds at the Natural History Museum."This study is the first time that stomach tissue has been investigated in this way and shows that plastic consumption can cause serious damage to these birds' digestive system.
