Hundreds of people turned up in the streets of Manchester to welcome the annualThe weather may have been a little overcast, but the buzz was still alive and kicking with parade getting underway at Varley Street in Miles Platting at lunchtime today before making its way to the city centre.
Commemorated across the UK, the day is held to honour the patron saint of England and, according to legend, the dragon slayer. A soldier in the Roman army, he refused to denounce his Christianity in the fourth century and was executed during the persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian.This year's parade featured the usual flurry of Saint George's Crosses being waved from pillar to post as horse-drawn carriages, buses, and military vehicles made their 2.5m way into town.
The Lord Mayor of Manchester also made an appearance, alongside Thelma McGrail, chair of the parade's organising committee who has been involved in every parade since it began in 2003. Local community pipe and brass bands, the Scouts, Guides, and theatre performers also took part in the grand spectacle.
