Calum Stephenson targeted the girl twice but has now been jailed
A sick teenager forced himself on a 12-year-old girl in a stairwell and told her she was a "good girl." Calum Stephenson, now 20, was 19 when he targeted the child at a stairwell at a block of flats in June last year. Stephenson took the girl there on a first occasion, asked her for her age and then asked if she could "keep a secret".
Stephenson was then interviewed a second time after the girl's DNA was found on the inside of his pants and CCTV footage showed them both in the stairwell. He did not answer any questions but indicated guilty pleas to two counts of rape of a child under the age of 13 and one of causing a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity at the magistrates' court after he had been charged.
The court heard the girl feels "guilty" for reporting the matter as she knows Stephenson will have to serve a custodial sentence, which will have an impact on his family. Mr Holland said: "She has been in a deep and dark place and couldn't keep it a secret because it causes her too much pain." The girl said: "I wish it never happened... the trauma is going to be with me forever.
Judge Clark handed Stephenson an extended sentence made up of eight years in custody and one year extended licence. He will have to serve two-thirds of the eight years in custody before being released. The judge told him: "She [the victim] had no capacity to consent and she did not and you committed cruel offences of rape against her."
