The Commons leader, usually adept at avoiding unhelpful soundbites, told MPs 'the Prime Minister is not under a desk' and 'I do not think there has been a coup'

took centre stage in Parliament on Monday as Liz Truss declined to speak publicly about her crumbling Government.on her economic strategy in order to hold a meeting with Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench Tory MPs.

No 10 insisted that the meeting was “private” and had been “pre-planned”, but it came as the 1922 Committee’s officers are under growing pressure to allow a no-confidence vote in Ms Truss.during the summer and are spoken of as possible prime ministers if the incumbent is forced out – each answered questions from MPs over a period of more than three hours.that there were serious reasons as to why Ms Truss was unable to address Parliament but refused to explain what they were.
