Penny Mordaunt has condemned Boris Johnson and his supporters for undermining the work of the privileges committee by branding it a “kangaroo court” RichardVaughan1 and eleanormia report

It comes as MPs on the committee have been offered beefed up security measures amid concerns of increased threats against them.

Although she did not name the former prime minister or his allies, Ms Mordaunt hit out at those who were attacking Parliament “for carrying out its work”. Tory peer Lord Marland also questioned the work of the committee, dismissing the balance of power in favour of the Conservatives as irrelevant. “The Government will in no way traduce or criticise the work of the committee who are doing exactly what Parliament has asked them to do,” the spokesman said.While the House of Commons would not be drawn on the increased security of committee members, a Parliament spokesman said the ability for MPs and their staff to “perform their Parliamentary duties safely both on and off the Estate is fundamental to our democracy”.
