Pele was someone who"transcended his sport" and a"towering figure" in football, Brazilian society and world sport, says Sky News' sports correspondent Rob Harris.
"Pele also really helped to reach audiences beyond traditional football heartlands, particularly in North America [where he later played]. It's because of his elegance, his grace on the field, his goals..." adds Harris. Delaney points out that Brazil had never won the World Cup until the genius of Pele helped claim the elusive trophy.
Posting on Instagram alongside a picture of him meeting Pele, he said: "My deepest condolences to all of Brazil, and in particular to the family of Mr Edson Arantes do Nascimento. "Promised his father a World Cup and presented us with three, in addition to scoring 95 goals in 113 matches with the yellow one.
