The appearance of a peacock in a Nottinghamshire village has left residents puzzled
. The beautiful bird appears to have taken up residence in Calverton, with there being numerous sightings of the bird.
The new celebrity has been snapped by neighbours on top of garden sheds, roofs, back gardens and gates. Many have now taken to social media to share their snaps as the peacock moves around the village. The question of where it came from is also causing a flap, with suggestions that it may be one of two who are normally based at Smeaton Lakes wooded site, set in 80 acres of lakes and parkland in Newark. Others have suggested that it's a wild bird.Charity www.helpwildlife.co.uk, provides advice to members of the public about wildlife. They state that as peafowl are non-native, it is illegal to allow them to escape into the wild so the owner should take responsibility for them.
Erin McDaid, of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, said: “Whilst not a native species, peafowl have been a familiar sight in the UK for centuries, having been imported as prized birds for private collections or as exotic gifts. Thankfully, unlike some introduced species, they don’t tend to cause issues for native wildlife – problems with Peacocks usually relate to noise and nuisance as they can be quite bold, especially in groups, but most people are still fascinated and pleased to see them.
"They became very popular from the 17th century particularly in parks and gardens and whilst birds have always escaped, the fact that they are still highly prized and popular means that escaped birds are often return to their owners or rehomed – helping to reduce the potential for impact on native wildlife.”
