Police officer cancelled ambulance for man who died in custody as colleague said he was 'fine'

A police officer has told an inquest that he cancelled an ambulance for a man who later died in custody as a colleague told him he was 'fine' and was 'bracing himself.'

On his arrival there, he was assessed by a custody nurse who said she couldn't find a pulse. He was taken to Tameside General Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1.30am in the early hours of Saturday, July 7. PC Healey said one of his colleagues, PC Craig O'Brien, said that Mr Moura appeared to be making some 'funky noises.' The inquest heard that following the comment, PC Healey went to the back of the van and shouted 'Andre' several times in a bid to 'rouse' him.

He can then be heard to shout 'is he responding?' to the officers who are stood at the back of the police van, being told in response that Mr Moura is 'bracing himself.' He said PC O'Brien 'stepped back from the van, shakes his head in my direction and says 'he's fine.' "It's that comment and that action that was the additional information," he told the hearing.

In response to questions from his legal representative Sam Green KC, PC Healey said he had 'complete trust and faith' in his colleagues and had 'no reason to doubt what they were saying.'
