SEN Reform NI have submitted evidence to the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee
A group of parents fighting for reform of special needs services and education have submitted evidence to the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee warning of a "deepening crisis".
It highlights how SEN services in Northern Ireland were at a "tipping point" prior to the coronavirus pandemic, with a report by the Northern Ireland Audit Office in 2020 saying "there is a need for an urgent overhaul of the SEN policies, processes and procedures" and that "the current funding of SEN services is not financially sustainable".
It has also shown the impact of the crisis on families as parents struggle with their mental health, financial strain, career sacrifices and guilt over neglect of their children as they are unable to spend the time that they want with them as they try to resolve SEN services issues for another child.
It notes how the funding for SEN Coordinators in schools has been drastically reduced, going from £22m in the year 2022/23 to just £11m in 2023/24. "It is disappointing that it has got to this position where our services have deteriorated to such a point and that parents are having to highlight these problems and show that urgent action is needed to address them.
