For many ministers and backbenchers terrified by the plunge in their poll ratings, Truss’s clear blue water seems more like a toxic toilet bleach, and several see their own hopes of staying in power going rapidly down the pan. Not that you’d know it from the Chancellor’s lips. After Labour’s Rachel Reeves accused him of being in “a dangerous state of denial”, Kwarteng hit back that the IMF had said “the mini-Budget had increased the forecast for growth”.
