While goblin mode has been embraced by some corners of the internet, it's also received its fair share of criticism. One of the main arguments is that goblin mode is generally only used to refer to women. Men, it seems, can behave as disgustingly as they want to without being labelled goblins, but this is not the case for women who dare to deviate from gendered expectations of looking polished and behaving in a ‘ladylike’ manner.

The term has also been criticized for the way it represents many everyday aspects of disabled people's lives as a kooky trend. Hannah Turner wrote for, “To me, and within the crip communities I reside in, goblin mode is a natural state of being. Crip, short for crippled, reclaims the slur used historically to discriminate against disabled people.
