Overwatch 2 is removing the need to add a phone number to play for the 'majority of existing Overwatch players.'
Following a difficult launch, Blizzard is changing the requirements of its SMS Protect measure and has"made the decision to remove phone number requirements for a majority of existing Overwatch players." [Updated]"We designed Overwatch 2 to be a live service, which enables us to be responsive to a variety of player feedback. We have made the decision to remove phone number requirements for a majority of existing Overwatch players,".
Measures included with the defence matrix include SMS Protect — when Overwatch 2 arrives on October 4th, every player will need to have a phone number on their battle.net account to launch the game. Blizzard says this should help if your account is compromised, while also making it"more difficult" for suspended or banned players to come back to the game.
