1 million NHS procedures risk being postponed due to jnr doc strikes, health leader warns theipaper Sir Julian Hartley, NHSProviders chief exec, said months of industrial action have cost the health service around £1bn so far, and damaged staff morale

Junior doctors could stage a sixth round of strikes next month before the BMA would have to reballot members to see if they want to continue industrial action for another six months.

The Government has offered medics a pay rise of 6 per cent plus a permanent increase of £1,250. It works out to an average pay rise of 8.8 per cent for junior doctors, which the BMA says is not enough.Chief Secretary to the Treasury John Glen said it will be the junior doctors’ decision if they continue striking through autumn and winter, rescheduling thousands of operations during a strike has an impact, adding: “People feel it and it’s not good for the economy, is not good for patients.

Asked if he is worried the Prime Minister will not meet his pledge to cut waiting lists if the strikes continue, the Treasury minister said: “We’ve made significant progress on the 18-month waiting list and we’ve also done other things like transfer responsibility to pharmacies. We’ve got over 100 new diagnostic centres up and running. We’ve got an increase of 16 per cent in the amount of tests that we’re doing. So we’re making a range of interventions across the health system.

Junior doctors will hold a rally outside Downing Street today. Dr Omolara Akinnawonu, 24, said she is striking for “future pay and working conditions”.
