Elaine and Philip Marco died after getting caught under the flooded bridge which has since been called 'fatally dangerous'
A man who got stuck under the same flooded Queens Drive bridge that claimed the lives of a couple called the spot "fatally dangerous".
"We didn't think it was that deep but then a column of water 10 feet high gushed out of a manhole. It filled up quickly and the car started floating. My now wife and I got out the car and waded up the hill through the water, but the driver stayed in the car. "The road has always been dangerous, now it is fatally dangerous. I don't understand why there has never been a warning system installed on the road.
Now councillor Carl Cashman, the leader of the city's opposition Liberal Democrat group, believes there are questions for the city council to answer about whether the state of the roads and other problems are contributing to the sort of dangerous flooding we saw this weekend. The letter, which is addressed to the council's chief executive Andrew Lewis, added: "It is clearly an issue that the council needs to tackle and that I want to work with you on. I have had a good recent discussion with Cllr Liam Robinson around the public realm and we agreed on many issues. I hope that we can work together to ensure that we can do everything within our power to stop a tragic event like this ever happening again.
Cllr Kemp said we also need something that monitors the amount of water underneath the bridge and alerts people with a sign that says "flooding do not enter." He said by taking these measures the council could then look at how to improve the road's infrastructure, which dates back more than 100 years, in the long term.
