North Sea oil prices offer 'historic opportunity' to transform Scottish economy to net zero
High energy prices provide an "historic opportunity" to transform the Scottish economy towards net zero, a pro-independence think tank has argued.
But it said only independence would maximise the "economic and social benefits" of green technologies for Scots. "This opportunity will not be realised if Scotland remains part of the UK as the political constraints of the UK mean the necessary policies will not be implemented by a Westminster Government led by either of the main UK parties.The paper's authors added: "The need for all economies to transition to net zero presents Scotland with considerable economic opportunities. It has great natural advantages including abundant renewable supplies of wind resources.
"But in order that the maximum economic and social benefits can be realised by these investments they need to be carried out within a policy framework determined by Government." Mark Ruskell, climate spokesman for the Scottish Greens, said: "The oil and gas giants have been raking in obscene profits at a time when both people and planet are really struggling.
