🎙️ TÁR's Noémie Merlant: 'I quit modelling because I was treated as a piece of meat' ⬇️ The ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ star talks about modelling, power, and playing opposite Cate Blanchett in her first English-language role
Indeed, Merlant, 34, isn’t exactly a newbie. The former model has been acting since 2011, though it wasn’t until she featured in it wasn’t until she featured in Céline Sciamma’s Bafta-nominatedA sensuous period love story between Merlant and Adèle Haenel, the film has just been included – at No. 30 – in’s greatest films of all time poll. It’s a remarkable placing for a movie just three years old, an indication of the impact it made.
One day on set, Blanchett ordered a food truck to arrive. “Just so everybody could have a nice moment together. All the time she was really thinking about everybody, from the crew to the cast. She’s so different from Lydia.” On set, there wasn’t time to debate the issues raised, but the film has clearly gnawed away at Merlant. The more she promotes it, the more it’s haunted her, making her reflect on “this crazy world we live in”.
Born in Paris, and raised near Nantes, where her parents worked as estate agents, Merlant was scouted for modelling work at 16. It allowed her to travel and learn English but left her uncomfortable.
