An average of just one passenger visited the station every nine days
A Nottinghamshire railway station has been declared the least used in 2021/22 - and no passengers were to be seen there when we visited this week. The Elston and Orston railway station is located in a rural village, and official figures from the Office of Rail and Road show it only had 40 recorded entries and exits between April 2021 and March 2022.
This means that on average just one passenger visited the station every nine days, which is less than any other station in the country. The station is served by two East Midlands Railway trains each day between Mondays and Saturdays, with no trains calling at the station on a Sunday. These services include the 7.04am towards Nottingham, and the second train at 5.11pm which leaves for Skegness. There are no ticket buying facilities, toilets or waiting rooms at the station.
In comparison, Nottingham railway station saw around 5.2 million entries and exits from pasengers within the same period, making it the 49th most busy in Britain. The second most popular station in Nottinghamshire was Newark North Gate, which has 674,472 visitors, and then Newark Castle with 563,340.
Feras Alshaker, director of planning and performance at the Office of Rail and Road, said: “It is heartening to see passengers return to travelling by rail following what was a difficult period for the industry during the pandemic. There’s still some way to go in order for station usage figures to return to pre-pandemic levels."
