This isn’t the first time Crocs have enjoyed a serious level of popularity. A take on the Danish clog, they launched 20 years ago as a brand prioritising comfort over style. Crocs were a staple for those constantly on their feet – chefs, surgeons, gardeners – but by the mid-noughties had found mainstream popularity and were everywhere. This ended in the 2008 recession, when the company found itself near bankruptcy as the shoes fell out of favour.
But it was not the end. Playing a long game, and pitting fashion alongside function has led to a Croc renaissance, as the brand found favour with Gen Z in its successful collaborations and the ability to individualise each shoe . These days, Crocs have risen to be the 13th most popular brand of footwear in the US andIt has been a swift ascent.
