Larger text size Very large text size Nine rail lines will be closed for more than three weeks in April affecting more than 1.5 million Melbourne commuters. The lines will be closed from April 1 to 23, with buses replacing trains on the Cranbourne, Pakenham, Frankston, Sandringham, Glen Waverley, Mernda, Gippsland and Geelong/Warrnambool lines. The lines will all close during the construction blitz for the South Yarra entrance to the Metro Tunnel.
Passengers will have to allow for up to an hour extra travel time on their commutes, Premier Daniel Andrews apologised for the "long list" of closures but said the rail shutdown was needed to do the work on the $10 billion project, which will create an extended underground rail network throughout the inner city. Advertisement Travel to AFL games at the MCG will also be disrupted during the first three weeks of April, as Richmond Station will be closed.
